He is a former landscape editor at Wallpaper, gardens editor at Country Life and founding editor of New Eden magazine. He is a contributing author on Chihuly Garden Installations (Abrams Books, 2011) and is the author of several books on gardens, including Great Gardens of America (Frances Lincoln, 2009), Avant Gardeners (Thames and Hudson, 2009), and The Arcadian Friends (Bantam, 2007).
