Marianne and her sister Elinor move in to Barton Cottage, where they meet al sorts of people. Mariane has a radiant and open personality, which causes her to very quickly develop feelings for John Willoughby. Her sister Elinor warns her of not being too rash and consider what people might gossip about, given John's roguish behaviour. Elinor herself is far more cautious than her sister, but also yearns for love. The sister discover that they must find a balance between sense and sensibilty in order to live in their new home.
