It is over one hundred years since the publication of the wide ranging archaeological field investigation undertaken on the Marlborough Downs by the Rev A C Smith.
This is a rich volume whose collective results demonstrate the virtues of a multi-period, interdisciplinary approach to reconstructing the history of the landscape and of specific monuments within it. That it has the potential to reveal new insights about Avebury, one of the most intensively studied prehistoric landscapes in Britain, is a testament to its efficacy and to the collective vision of the authors who collaborated on it.
