The Diaries of Anthony Ashley-Cooper, Seventh Earl of Shaftesbury (1801-85): Vol. 1, Part One demonstrates the emergence of Lord Ashley, the 'Poor Man's Earl', as a passionate evangelical reformer and determined advocate for a range of domestic and international issues and causes.
David Brown has been Professor of Modern History at the University of Southampton since 2012, having previously taught at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. He has published widely on nineteenth century British history including a major biography of Lord Palmerston (Yale University Press, 2010). He held a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship, 2019-22.
